Collier and Charlotte counties helped with a statewide competition to see who could collect the most jars of peanut butter.
The University of Florida started the friendly competition. Forty-five of its UF/IFAS extension offices participated along with Florida A&M partners, and many community organizations and individuals.
It’s a way to highlight Florida’s peanut production while fighting hunger. In all, the competition raised nearly 20,000 jars. They will go to food pantries and programs in the counties where they were collected.
For the second straight year, Santa Rosa County won the peanut butter challenge, collecting 1,970 jars. That’s enough to make about 440,000 peanut butter sandwiches.
Win or lose, all the contributions help people in need.
